The current political climate feels like a reality show. We’re witnessing the trivialization of real life drama.
The producers keep raising the stakes just to see if we’ll snap.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of people are snapping like rubber bands, which only creates an even more polarized atmosphere.
One side screams, the other side screams even louder, and behind the camera an intern is frantically trying to delete a loaded tweet before it becomes a headline. This isn’t helpful.
I can’t keep up anymore. I’m constantly bracing for the next debacle. I had enough trying to drink enough water, remembering my passwords, and making sure I paid my bills on time. But here we are…
It remains true that with this level of chaos in the news, we must take care of our mental health. So, I compiled a list of ten healthy activities to help you stay grounded. Please, read on.
1. For heaven’s sake, go outside.
Take a little walk. Nothing else. Go bird watching or people watching. I don’t care, but get out for at least 15 minutes.
2. Breath deeply.
I’ve been holding my breath since the start of the pandemic and my belly since 1984. It’s bad for you. Let it all hang out. Expand your lungs (and your belly) for a little extra relaxation.
No need for chanting or special techniques.
3. Move a little.
Walking is great, but when indoors, do a bit of stretching or dancing. Nothing fancy. A gentle stretch now and then will do. Stretch while sitting down or when still in bed first thing in the morning.
4. Put down the phone and nobody gets hurt.
You carry a nasty rabbit hole to hell in your pocket. Use it wisely. No alerts are allowed. Don’t engage in empty “debates”. It’s all orchestrated to make you snap. You’re probably debating a bot. Instead, listen to music or a podcast. Sign up for newsletters that match your interests. Follow people that bring you positive energy and inspiration.
5. Connect with a real person you find interesting.
Reach out and be kind. Be supportive and ask questions. You’ll be surprised to find that many people crave real connections right now. And remember that it’s ok to communicate with people outside of your comfort zone. It’s an opportunity for growth.
6. Make something with your own two hands.
I make collage. You might want to make ceramics, knitted potholders or origami cranes. It doesn’t matter as long as you do it. Because, thinking about doing something IS NOT the same as doing it. In the words of Nacho Libre: “you must get down to the nitty gritty.”
7. Read biographies.
What?? Yes, please do. You will be amazed at the unimaginable difficulties well known public figures had to overcome. We often focus on the glitz, glamour or accomplishments, but there’s so much hardship behind them. It’s all about gaining perspective.
8. Write yourself a list of things you enjoyed today.
Journaling seems too big an undertaking? I say jot down whatever you liked each day and put the pieces of paper in a jar. Keep it simple, but be regular. Three things each day is plenty.
9. Mindfulness for dummies.
I’m talking about anything that shifts your focus from the slow train wreck we’re witnessing: Treat yourself to a pastry and savor it. Buy flowers and take in the colors, textures and smells. Fold your clothes slowly and sort them out with care. That’s mindful too.
10. Sleep is not lazy.
I know firsthand how essential sleep is. My chronic pain has mangled my sleep cycle. I don’t remember when I last had a full night of sleep. So take naps if you can and prioritize sound sleep at nighttime. Crack open your window, forget your screens after dark, and keep your toes warm. Sweet dreams!
Imagine a better way: creativity helps

Creativity can teach fairness and flexible thinking. The brain benefits from creative pursuits because it’s required to explore possibilities. By making decisions and choices you develop the ability to discern the best options.
Social interactions demand the same frame of mind. Your creativity helps you understand other people’s motives and opinions. In short, it makes you a more open minded person and it actually protects you from those trying to deceive you with fake information. Who doesn’t need a little help doing that right now.
Cultivate a little creativity daily.
