In case you don't know yet, the MAD part of MADCOLLAGE does not allude to the state of my mental health. Although my degree of sanity remains debatable (I chose the life of an artist), MAD refers to my smashing birthplace, Madrid.
In Shakespearean speak (and without trying to sound too fancy), Madrid kicks ass. Yep. The coolest, greenest, most LGBTQ friendly, most dynamic capital in Europe is chock full of collage related places to visit. These are a few of my favorite ones (in two languages).
The Cuesta de Moyano
The Cuesta de Moyano is one of the most enchanting corners of Madrid.
A year-round open air bookfair, the Cuesta de Moyano is situated in a timeless part of the city. Surrounded by elegant buildings, this pedestrian-only area is visited by millions of people every year. Flanked by The Parque del Retiro, the fair heralds the beginning of Spring with a myriad of events. For more than a century, it’s been the place where book lovers of all ages gather to enjoy a sunny Sunday morning.
La Cuesta de Moyano
La Cuesta de Moyano es uno de los rincones más encantadores de Madrid.
Una feria del libro al aire libre abierta durante todo el año, La Cuesta de Moyano está situada en una zona emblemática de la ciudad. Rodeada de elegantes edificios, esta área peatonal es visitada por millones de personas cada año. Colindante con el Parque del Retiro, esta feria augura el comienzo de la primavera con una gran oferta de eventos. Durante mas de un siglo, este ha sido el lugar donde amantes de los libros de todas las edades se han dado cita para disfrutar de una mañana soleada de Domingo.
The Rastro
This is the most popular open-air market in Madrid. It began operating during the 15th century. Currently, people from all over the world flock to the area around La Ribera de Curtidores every Sunday and during holidays. More than 3.000 vendors offer all manner of goods: trinkets, second-hand clothing, antiques, artisanal crafts, books and vinyl. Additionally, wonderfully curated antique stores hold treasures for the eagle-eyed shopper. The atmosphere is incomparable and somewhat hectic.
El Rastro
Este es el mercado al aire libre mas popular de Madrid. Se inauguró durante el siglo XV. Hoy en día, personas de todo el mundo se acercan hasta la zona de La Ribera de Curtidores todos los Domingos y días de fiesta. Mas de 3000 vendedores tienen a la venta todo tipo de objetos: bisutería, ropa de segunda mano, antigüedades, artesanía, libros y vinilos. Además, preciosas tiendas de antigüedades esconden tesoros para aquellos compradores de buen discernimiento. La atmósfera es inimitable y un poco caótica.
San Ginés Bookstore
Opened in 1650, this is a rare gem of a bookstore. A veritable paradise for book lovers set in the beautiful old part of the city, only a few minutes away from The Plaza Mayor. Whether you are a collector or just a bargain hunter, this bookstore provides every visitor with a charming and unique experience.

Las Letras Neighborhood
This small neighborhood was once the home of hugely important figures in Spanish literature such as Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Miguel de Cervantes. In its narrow streets one can find stores full of handmade goods, antiques, and unique art galleries. On the first Saturday of each month, the business owners host their open-air market called Mercado de las Ranas. What a perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with the diverse offerings within these small shops.
Barrio de las Letras
Este barrio está lleno de historia y encanto. Fue lugar de residencia de algunos de los gigantes de la literatura española. Lope de Vega, Quevedo y Miguel de Cervantes vivieron aquí. En sus estrechas calles se pueden encontrar locales con artesanía, anticuarios y galerías de arte. El primer sábado de cada mes, los comerciantes instalan al aire libre su Mercado de las Ranas. Que mejor momento para familiarizarse con la variada oferta de estas pequeñas tiendas.
Quintana
A bit farther afoot from the center of the city we find a small, yet exceptional market: the trading card market located in the Plaza de Quintana. While most of the cards on offer are not vintage, there are some exceptions, such as the collectable trading cards from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This market is open to the public and it comes together spontaneously every Sunday morning.

Un poco más alejado del centro de la ciudad, encontramos un insólito mercadillo: el mercadillo de cromos de la Plaza de Quintana. La mayoría de la oferta no es vintage, pero siempre existen excepciones como los cromos coleccionables de los siglos XX y XXI. Este mercado abierto a todo el público ocurre de manera espontánea los domingos por la mañana.

Comic Hunter is a small business that was born out of a passion for comic books. It specializes in out-of-print issues, graphic novels and original artwork within this genre. Their extensive selection is a result of their twenty-five-year experience selling comic books in the store and online. The store is situated in an excellent enclave, right in the center of the city.
